Things went horribly wrong. It was a real train wreck. We tried to {compensate|mitigate the situation, but it was like trying to stop a blizzard with a spoon. We're still picking up the shards and feeling the blow of this epic fail.

This issue has spiraled out of control. It's a total disaster. We've tried anything to fix it, but nothing seems to function. At this point, it feels like we're hopelessly stuck. Frankly, I don't know what else to do. This is a nightmare of epic proportions.

Worst Day Ever
It all started with a case of uncontrollable hair. I couldn't do it to look decent. As I was getting ready out the door, I trippedover and with a thud all over my new shoes. To make matters worse, I was completely running behind for work.
I arrived. My {boss|mentor|was absolutely furious. I managed to explain, but it was pointless.
The rest of the day was an absolute nightmare. fell apart. I stay awake.
By the time I got home, I was exhausted. This day, this atrocious day will be forever remembered as the worst day ever.

It all started out badly with a simple mishap/incident/screw-up. But then things went from bad to absolutely terrible. A series/chain/cascade of unfortunate/awful/disastrous events unfolded/occurred/piled on top each other, leaving me feeling like I was in a more info nightmare/horror movie/comedy of errors. It's the kind of situation where you just want to throw your hands up.
